Your alternator is held on with 2 bolts. One on the underside which acts like a hinge, and one on the top which when you loosen it, you should be able to push and pull on the alternator loosening or tightening the belt. Quite simple.
If you have never taken it in for a tune up since 97 (8 year ago) you are late. It needs it Even though the car is suppose to last for "X" number of years, that says nothing about the oil, air filter, spark plugs, distributor, battery, muffler, timing belt; and other stuff.
This is...
It has a spring loaded switch inside (basically like putting your two palms together in prayer. This is the position when the car is not running. An electric current passes thru from your left elbow down to the palm into the right palm and out the right elbow. The light is on...
Before you press on the unlock button, press down on the lid(like you were closing it tighter on the seals) Then press the button. If it releases...the catch needs to be adjusted. Let them do it at VW. Only takes them 5 min.
VW is very thorough in its mechanics - no shortcuts are taken. So, the bottom rad hose is removed to remove the coolant....and then the thermostat housing is taken off and the thermostat is removed and the block is drained of the rest of the coolant.
This way, the thermostat is inspected...

check the concentration of the coolant. The closer it is to "water-like" the greater the chance of overheating. Should be a 50/50 or 60/40 mixture to get the maximum heating/cooling temp out of the coolant.
Can the police pick out your car among the speeders, catch and ticket you? Yes they can. Can they nail you for having loud exhaust(even though other cars have loud exhaust) Yes they can. Window tint-yes.
They will get to those other cars sooner or later. You just happened to be sooner...
Then it shouldn't take a mechanic an hour to figure out what is wrong. They have electronic sensors that will tell them if it is exhaust gases.
BTW Mechanics don't get that kind of money....the place of business is charging that(if it is a dealership), However, as this sounds like a fault I...
It could be a different engine size but some parts are interchangeable.. Easiest way is to pull both and compare in every way. If they look the same, they are the same.
