I recently passed my pratical driving test. I prefer to coast in gear if I need to stop after some time. (like when approaching a traffic light). My instructor says the correct way is to use breaks and disengage the clutch when stopping. I downshift to 2 or 3rd gear depending on my current speed...
...on. doesnt this REDUCE gas mileage? Is there any reason a car company would program a car to do this? With car companies trying to INCREASE gas mileage, it seems to me like this causes the opposite effect.
My 2008 Kia Sportage started making thumping noises when it is coasting, feels like it is coming from the front right of the vehicle. It is very suttle most of the time, and you can't hear it when accelerating or braking.

when i was learning how to drive manual my driving instructor would tell me not to keep the clutch pressed in (coasting) when turning corners at a safe speed. i have no idea why but i still sometimes do it!! can this damage my clutch or gear box? obviously i drive a manual its an 84 nissan pulsar.
