will the iphone 4 still say Verizon 3G at the top left or does it say something different if there is no service activated to the phone ?

Ebay has plenty of these. I use a dumb phone for talking. Occasionally, I'm at a free wifi spot and could use some internet access. I do not need a data plan with lots of bandwidth. Can I buy a used smartphone and just use it for free wifi and not for the cell phone company's data or voice plan?
