How do the various divisions of Judaism define (or not define) "being born Jewish"?
I always heard that it depended upon having a Jewish mother, but I assume that it gets more complicated than that depending the particular Jewish tradition?

This used to confuse me a lot when I was younger, but now makes somewhat sense. Still, I don't understand how a religious body can have soooo many divisions. Catholics, Evangelicals, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterian, Protestant, Catholic, Anglican, East/West Orthodox etc...I don't understand...
