When C button is pressed to clear a character when texting, 'Switch to MMS' message persistently displays. How can I prevent this?

I've tried googling an watching YouTube videos on the phone but it's hard to tell if the keys light up at all. Can some one confirm for me that they light up on the dark ? I just want to be able to see the keys if I'm texting at night

I don't plan on using any apps/internet on it; I just want it for its messaging capabilities, mp3 player, and camera. Will AT&T force a data plan on me if I buy this phone unlocked?
