I've messed up with synaptic and I was forced to reinstall the desktop environment of ubuntu but now the applications do not show on Alt(Tap) key (HUD command line). How can I reset that? (Even Software Center does not show in HUD).

Just bought this beauty but the heads up display is very faint even with the dimmer wide open. Also the numbers are thin, almost like they've been squashed together. What's wrong, how do I fix it and how much will it cost me?
