I've really gotten into science fiction lately, for example Doctor who. Does anyone know any good sci-fi movies or tv shows?

I am thinking about buying a portable dvd player. It says: "Playback DVD-R/-RW/-R DL/+R/+RW and CD-R/-RW with DivX" I download a lot of TV shows onto my computer. Is it possible to play them on the portable dvd player? Do i need to convert them using Divx or something?
