Why did August reveal he knew who Bealfire was on the typewriter rather than just say it?

in the 1996 film pinocchio asked gepetto to carve him a girlfriend, did he get one in the end?

It looked like he was smoking a cigar in the billiard hall, but then why did his eyes get bloodshot ? What do you think it was and why?
