Hi, I have a 2006 GMC Yukon, 4x4 with the 5.3 liter Vortec and Autotrac. It has 90,000 miles, and lately I've noticed a strange clanking or ratcheting sound coming from the rearend, sounds like metal on metal. I've narrowed it down to mainly or only happening when put it in reverse to back up...
its the ring and pinion gears and together most people call them a chunk
its really not had to change and almost fool proof "almost"
i would say get a chiltons or haynes manual from your local auto parts store and read though it and see what you think

however did not pull pinion now it howl? now the rearend howls while up on jack could pinion cause this problem?
have turned adjusters in each axle tube both directions and still howls
I have a 1979 Chevy C10, and based on the VIN it orginally had an Inline 6 Engine.
I don't know what other info would help but I am trying to find out what type of rear-end it has on it?
