I attended a reformed Jewish congregation. At one point during a prayer, everyone turned around and faced the back of the room. Why?

I really liked this book because the vampires weren't like most of the modern vampires in books these days. I also liked it because the main characters didn't really have any superhuman abilities (besides night vision). Does anyone know any books sort of similar to this one?
