solenoid

1998 GMC Yukon It starts shifting really hard after I go about 20 miles or so. I stop the car and turn off the engine for about a minute and it is OK for another 20 miles or so. Besides that it runs fine.

I was told that this solenoid is in the drivers side rear next to the fuel tank.

This project involves a cathedral chime set built in 1948 and originally had a multitap transformer to operate the strike solenoids. Can I use a DC supply and a transistors to fire the solenoids?? Duty cycle is very short.
