I have a 97 honda civic. has about 126000 miles. want to trade for a 97 jeep cherokee. blue book value for mine is about 2700. the guy has his jeep priced for 1800. my car does need a little work, brakes and has a cracked bumper. the seller says there is nothing wrong with the jeep. i am going to look at it with my dad (has been a mechanic for 30+ yrs). he told me to do research and see if it was a good deal. should i ask for trade plus a couple hundred cash, or just do a straight across trade? the only thing i am losing out on is gas. my civic get 32mpg, jeep gets 15mpg.

my civic: manual steering, 5 speed, 2 door, manual locks/windows. cd player, modified exhaust, american racing wheels, no a/c,

his jeep: power everything, a/c, leather interior.

anyway....... what should i do?

Way your pros and cons... Your civic, if maintained properly, will last till almost 250k. The jeep, probably 200k. Brake pads are about $20 for the front and $20 for the back which is VERY cheap. The little four cylinder engine is VERY easy to work on and cheap if something is to happen to it. Your father is a mechanic ask him why your ac doesnt work, maybe it just needs freon? Or even a compressor he could still put it in for you. Im sure there is something wrong with his jeep. Look it over for ANY kind of leak(engine or tranny).. Feel the tranny fluid for metal. Look for ANY kind of smoke. Try the brakes. A big thing with jeeps are the ball joints, so check those out! Look at your car aswell. If you have any of these problems, maybe it would be best to part ways with your civic! Its truly your decision. What do you want? Its not like you cant sell it down the road, or even sell your civic for 2700, then buy his for 1800. I would definitly ask for some cash ontop. Good luck!

always try to get a little money from him, but honestly if he doesnt want to do that it sounds like a pretty good deal if the jeep is in pretty good shape. id say - try to get a trade plus a little cash, if he wont do it, just do a straight trade

if you really want to get rid of your honda, it could be a good deal, just keep in mind it wont be as reliable as the honda, and it will have horrible mpg (obviously). also, the resale value will stay about the same with your honda, while the jeep will go way down the more miles you put on it. and also you will be giving up some fun with trading your somewhat sporty honda for a boring suv, but you will also be more comfortable driving the jeep because it has a/c and leather seats.

just really matters if you like the jeep more than your honda and if you can live with the differences. hope this helps.

First you will have to see how many miles the jeep has if it has more then 160xxx miles it wouldn't be a fair trade
