It shakes when it's idling, is sluggish, and when going up a hill it jerks feels kinda like I'm driving over speed bumps or something. I'll start up the hill and since there's very little power the rpms drop quickly and it starts jerking. Now there are spurts when it's cold where it will run smooth for two seconds and then back to sluggish / vibrating. Do you know what causes this? I was thinking either the timing or maybe a bad plug / plug wire or something making it not hit on all 8. Any ideas?

It has a V8 is rear wheel drive and previously was flawless. Only has 98,000 on it.
I just got it out of the shop about two weeks ago. There they put on a new fuel pump, water pump, fan, and replaced I know one plug wire, may have been all. It was all done by a very reputable mechanic and I would think the fuel pump and filter would be checked. That's interesting though since that's the only thing that has changed and now there is trouble.

This car does not have fuel injectors, thanks for the response but 83 buicks have a carborator

Tune up may be the way to go, and it wouldn't hurt anything even if it ended up being a fuel pump issue. I may start there once I speak to the mechanic who did the recent work to make sure there was a new fuel filter and such put on.
