I just picked up a used 1994 Ford Taurus LX. It seems to drive fine, no real problems except:
The care is only getting about 12-13 mpg. The engine light will go on and off while driving. A mechanic tried running diagnostics, but no codes came back. When I first start the care, the light is not on. Usually, once I hit about 45 mph it will come on, then go off when i get to around 50, or drop to around 30, but comes back on again after hitting those speeds. What could be wrong with it, and what can I do myself? I use to be an aircraft mechanic so I am mechanically inclined. Thanks for any help.
Sorry Ryan, yes the engine is a 3.8.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the transmission. It runs smooth, accelerates nicely. No strange smells or oil or gas. No leaks that I can detect. The only thing is the poor fuel mileage and the engine light. I will look more into the codes. Thanks for all the responses that are mechanic based and not oppinion based.
