1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport rear passenger door won't open?

So like the Jeep's door opened from the inside and the outside....no problem. One day hard to open from the outside. The button to push (can be pushed in completely) but it seemed as though the door was just stuck to the frame. My husband finally got it to open then it would not close. The latch was turned the other way. He used a screwdriver and pliers to get the latch the other way so the door could close. He finally did it and now it won't open from the inside and the outside. Even with it being unlocked. Does anybody know what the problem is and how I can fix it?
