Thinking about buying (from a private party, a fellow American Legion post member), Ive read some horror stories but of course people happy with the vehicle don't post their 'success' stories.

Any thoughts?

Jeep Cherokees are just about the worst product Chrysler has ever made. A friend of mine has been working on car for years, and he see's more Jeep Cherokee's in his shop then any other brand of vehicle. I wanted to buy a Jeep Cherokee once, and he strongly urged me not to. Yes, they are popular. Yes, you do see a lot of them on the road. This because they're one of the more affordable SUV's out there. The junk yards are full of them, check it out sometime. The advantage of owning one is, there is a lot of available parts for them. Lower your selling price. Then again, maybe someone who doesn't know any better will bite for that price. Good luck.

Of course, if it's in good condition this value goes up - and it's more about what people are willing to pay for something rather than a general book value of worth.

package, what amenities, etc.

However, for the Laredo model with a 6 engine, auto, 4 wd and standard amenities, that's about 800 too much.

You might want to take a glance at the consumer reports reliability rankings. I seem to recall the whole Jeep section had lots of black dots. Not good. Then again, I had a lot of fun with VW Rabbits, also lots of bad marks. Ideally the fun exceeds the headaches.

If you like to tinker with cars, go for it. Cars with that many miles often need everything made of rubber or bearings replaced in the suspension. Just did it to my car-- ball joints, tie rod bushings, sway bar bushings and mounts, wheel bearings, struts, and CV joints. Oh, and the brake calipers probably need an overhaul or replacement.

IIRC, the '95 Grand Cherokee is the same body and drivetrain as the Cherokee Sport. The 4.0L in-line 6-cylinder engine is usually good for 200-250k miles, the AW4 transmission is the same, all assuming the vehicle has been maintained properly and not excessively abused. I have a 2000 Cherokee with 158k miles and it still runs strong.

But I would consider $2,500 a far more reasonable price, unless the vehicle still looked brand new and you have full service records showing all required maintenance done on-schedule, and some of the more common and expensive failure items being taken care of (heater core, a/c condenser, head gasket, shocks, tie-rod ends, ball joints).

People knock Jeeps and CR rates them poorly, yet they are still one of the most popular vehicles on the road today. The Cherokees were not built as strong as the Wranglers, but still have show an incredible long lifespan as compared to most other vehicles. Look around on the highway during your travels and see how many 10-20 year old Cherokees are on the road, compared to any other vehicle that age.
