First check you brake fluid, sounds like you have air in the line.

I recently purchased a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire sedan. It's automatic, and has 110,997 miles. The car idles just fine, but when you press the brake pedal, it goes nearly to the floor, and the car seems to want to stall...but it doesn't. The "check engine" light is on as well. No other issues though. What could be wrong?

First, suspect the brake booster. If the diaphragm inside rots away from oil vapors created by the engine, you will have no boost and the idle speed will change due to the leak when you step on the brake pedal. Have the computer scanned for free at an Auto Zone. Also, locate and clean your throttle body and idle air control valve with Gum-out. Good Luck!!

It is an old, well used car. there are a huge list of issues that could be wrong. i hope you didnt pay too much for a 110k sunfire. but if you did i wouldnt worry too much about what you are experiencing, this is normal for any make/model. its like using a OS that is several years old, you end up running into some "bugs". you will probably be just fine.

if anything you might check the timing belt.
