2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue Problem - Battery and/or Alternator?

I tried starting my car last night (Saturday, 10/10/09), and my car wouldn't start up, my whole car was 50% dim than normal, my RPM gauge went from 0 RPM to 8,000 RPM, and my gas gauge went from the 1/2 tank to Empty, car dinged (unfasten seatbelt - driver) softer than before, and whenever I tried to start my car, the ignition cranked, everything was flashing, and when I turned my hazard lights on, when I opened a door, the dome lights will flash (dim to normal), and my power windows would go super slow, pause for 1/2 a second, resume up slowly, and that's how I knew that my battery is dead, and alternator. However, my friend's dad helped me jump-start my car, I thanked him, but before my car officially started, the car wouldn't turn over for the first time, the second time, I punched the gas pedal numerous of times, and started right up. Another thing I noticed was no heat or air coming through the vents.

Can anyone please tell me if it's either both the alternator and battery, or just the battery or alternator?

Thanks.

My car is a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue, has a 3.5L Twin Cab v6 engine, 298 HP, and the car is 8 yrs. old. This is my first car, that I own, that has issues, major issues.

Please help me; and thanks for your support, everyone.
