The 2001 Jetta 1.8T's timing belt breaks anywhere between 60,000 - 80,000 miles. As soon as you reach 60K that mark I recommend you need to get timing belt changed as if the timing belt breaks then you are looking at a cost between $2,500-$4,500 depending upon where you take your car to and it is not worth it. If you are the first owner of the car then VW dealership should do timing belt job for free for free as it is a known defect in VWs and is covered under warranty. While you are at it make sure you also get water pump changed and get an after market water pump as impeller blades of OEM waterpump is made of plastic and it will break soon between 70k - 80k miles. Waterpump is not covered under VW warranty!
If you are the second owner then buy a timing belt kit online from shops like mjmautohaus.com. It would cost you about $250. Take that kit to a good independent mechanic, and not to a stealer-ship, and that mechanic should do it for $300-$450 as labor cost depending upon where you take it to. That way you should save a ton of money as stealer-ship would charge you upward of $1200 for this job.
If you already have got timing belt changed once then try to get timing belt changed every 60k -70k miles on turbo cars.
