I own a 2002 Taurus with approx. 160,000 miles on it and today I started the car but was unable to shift gears from "park" to "drive" or "reverse". I also noticed that the lights were a little bit dimmer today and it flickered for a moment when I started the car. Does anyone have any suggestions what the problem might be?

is it manual transmission or none? Well i'll give u scenarios for both. If it is a manual, then the clutch is gone. Try shifting it when the car is not turned on. But considering u said "park and reverse" it means its an automatic. It could be that the transmissions gone. The lights flickering or dimming can be a low battery or it may just be normal for that car. If the lights are dimmer, then they may be shorted or just a weak battery (as mentioned before) if u can give me any more info email me at [email protected]

I'm guessing there is a problem with the shifter inter lock assembly. It is actuated thru brake light switch. Check it out thoroughly. I have seen a fair amount of failure with these fords switches.
