2002 Jeep Liberty Stuck in 4Lo mode, shifter loose & won't change!?

I was in my driveway earlier today and in 4Hi and got stuck in some ice and snow, so I engaged the 4Lo just to get myself out. I did and drove about ten feet more, parked, and went to shift back to 2wd. In the past, this jeep has had issues shifting out of 4Lo and my dad had just told me to push hard down on the shifter to get it out... well I did. And all that happened was the shifter finally moved to where it would be if it was in normal, regular, 2wd driving, but the Jeep is still in 4Lo mode.
I tried to shift it up to 4Hi or part-time, just to shift it back down to 2wd, but now the shifter is loose and moves up and down with almost no friction.
What should I do? Thanks!!!

your linkage connecting the shifter to the transfer case was probably rotten from lack of use and when you forced it, it snapped. take it to your dealership and have them fix it. it could either be cheap ($100) or expensive ($500) I don't work on many jeeps at my toyota dealership, but I've seen it happen often enough.
