i have and 03 dodge cummins that is hard starting. just got it and it would not start, put a fuel filter in and it started right up. still takes a lot longer then my friends truck. i have run a bunch of cleaner but no luck, starts better cold. it has a p0602 error on the computer and i am not sure what is is, it says a check sum error. has great power, runs great and does not smoke. i am changeing the lift pump, but i also am woundering id it is the fca. i took the filter out for a minute and it started like it should and when it takes a while to start it is like it is not getting fuel, any ideas?

I'm sure you've checked that all the glow plugs are good, but make sure because you need all of them working for reliable diesel engine cold starting. Glow plugs burn out all the time. You can measure the current (Amps) flowing to all the glow plugs to determine if one or two of them is bad. Use an inductively coupled ammeter that just clamps around the wire going to all the glow plugs. Each glow plug draws maybe 7 Amperes, so you should read about 55 Amperes on a cold start. If one glow plug is bad, you'd read less than 50 Amperes.
