99 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM. New Process Gear model 242 WJ
Transfer case. Jeep has 150k, reman trans, reman dif front and rear. Just about the only
OEM part in the driveline (and engine) is this case.
The drive line ran smooth and quiet, would shift into and out of 4 WD p/t and f/t and
low range and back to 2 WD without any difficulty, before unexplained break down.
I stopped at the end of my drive, shifted into reverse to back down my drive
(while in 4wd p/t) and the transfer case made a grinding noise and the jeep would not move.
I shifted then t/c into 2wd with the same result, just grinding. I shifted to fulltime 4wd it.
(when the t/c was in neutral all was quiet) in 4weel low, I could drive the truck, but it made a grinding noise over 20 mph.
I have removed and disassembled the case only to find it in almost perfect condition.
No broken/bent shift forks or plastic wear guides. No worn out bearing or chain. NO BROKEN GEARS. no bad planets ring gears...etc. The only indication of any noise is from some slight chipping on the inside leading edge of the shift ring(not the range shift ring, the other one). This is the shift ring that is not listed for sale everywhere I have looked! Guess it has never broken. Even the detent spring and bearing is tight. The shift plate looks good. The shift linkage appears to be non-adjustable, the cable just snaps in place at the shift leaver.
I don't know what to fix before I put it back together. Please advise. Thank you.
