4wd light on ford explorer 98 ?

i used my 4wd low once when i was stuck in snow just to be able to back up and move forward....but when i went to take it out and put it back into auto the light didn't go off....i made sure the car was in neutral and the brake pressed when switching but the light is still on......and i don't think it is on because right now the button is on auto but i would get stuck and not be able to move and when i move the switch to low i will feel the normal bump when it activates and then i will be "unstuck" but this whole the light is on.......and also noticed that after driving for a while doing about 50km/h the o/d light starts blinking as well....

can you offer any help??
