I am purchasing a 74 Volkswagen beetle. It is a good shape for being so old but I do want to fix it up. The gas pedal is disconnected. How do I fix the gas pedal and on average how much would this cost?

My uncle works on cars but I would like to know as much as I can about this year and model so that I am prepared if something goes wrong and he is not there.

There's a cable that goes through small tube inside the frame tunnel, right near the pedal, and it comes out in the engine compartment near the throttle assembly. You should be able to replace it without removing the pedal cluster, if you can wade through the gunk and dirt. In fact, it might have just become disconnected from the pedal. If the cable is still there, you might be able to reattach it. Disconnect it from the throttle body in the engine compartment first to give yourself some slack.

You should know that there's a BIG difference between a 1974 and 1975 Beetle - that's when they switched to fuel injection, so lots of things are different, but the throttle cable works the same.
