I'm just curious on what you think a general price to rebuild the transmission on my 1986 Toyota pickup. It's a manual 5 speed 4wd. I know it needs it, because of the humming sounds in 3,5 gear and 244,000 miles. Also it won't stay in first even if I hold it. Just slips out and tries to grind. Oh, does anyone know if 1,3,5 are connected in some way? They seem to be worse than 2,4 which are fine. Thanks

just by the shifter/stick itself.

1-2, 3-4 are each on their respective shifter forks and shafts. as is 5-R.

is your shifter/stick sloppy (not the xfer shifter)? there's a teflon bushing at it's base that has been known to be the root cause with issues like this when not addressed.

since now it has issues in purdy much every gear, you're right. need a new or remanned trans. don't bother with a rebuild on yours. just use yours as a core. cheaper.

check ebay for a popular vendor with a good rep. my guess is 3-4 hundred. wrecking yard may have one for 150 or so. but most are just guaranteed a core. so......

BTW, here's a FREE factory shop manual for your truck. it's not a cheap chilton/haynes.

a cheaper (chilton/haynes clone) online only manual can be found here,

just sign up, plug in vehicle info, and go to "repair info"

cheers!
