It sounds like to me if you're only getting the stereo display lights working due to a 12 volt positive feed being missing. The car stereo requires one 12 volt positive feed that is a switchable feed meaning the ignition feeds it power once in the aux or run position and there is a second 12 volt positive feed that is always present we call it the constant feed.

You could have a blown fuse so check all the in car fuses and the aftermarket stereo you bought should also have a in-line fuse in it's wiring it came with that fuse could be blown and that would be a glass fuse.Note many times the stereo will be mentioned on the fuse chart only once when in fact two fuses will be related to the stereo feed so check them closely usually the cig lighter fuse is also feeding the stereo power too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way the universal wiring harness that you sound like you purchased could be the wrong one and you could have ground issues but if you need anymore help or advice I'd be glad to help you and you can email me.
