We've been talking about the FedEx Cup standings for an entire year and on Sunday afternoon at the Wyndham Championship, they finally mattered. A handful of big names sitting outside the top-125 cutoff were able to secure their place at The Barclays for the first leg of the playoffs.
But not everyone was so lucky. A couple of names sitting inside the safe zone watched their playoff chances -- and a shot at $10 million -- fall by the wayside.
Here's a look at who's heading to the first leg of the playoffs, and who's heading home to watch the FedEx Cup on television.
Who's in
Williams McGirt (Final FedEx Cup ranking: 125): Like the last guy picked in the NFL Draft, McGirt was the lucky golfer to get the last spot in the FedEx Cup. McGirt finished the week at 5-under (T-52), which ended up being enough to punch his FedEx Cup ticket.
Ernie Els (118): After missing the cut at the PGA Championship, Els announced he was going to play the Wyndham for only the second time in his career. It paid off, as Els shot 8-under for the tournament; his T-30 finish moved him from No. 126 to No. 118.
Padraig Harrington (124): Like Els, Harrington decided to play the week following the PGA to get inside the top-125 cutoff. While a couple of players made big jumps in the standings, Harrington made the largest jump of any player sitting outside the cutline, posting a T-47 (6-under) finish that moved him up six spots from No. 130 to No. 124.
Who's out
Justin Leonard (126): A mediocre*season ended with a brutal finish for Leonard. Needing a par putt on the final hole to secure the 125th spot in the standings, Leonard watched his putt slide by the hole. He finished a mere 6 points behind William McGirt.
Matt Jones (127): No. 122 at the beginning of the week, Jones missed the cut by a shot and had to wait around to see where the rest of the field finished before learning his fate. Just like Justin Leonard, Jones finished six points outside the top-125. Missing the cut is one thing, but having it also affect your place in the FedEx Cup was a double-whammy.
Cameron Beckman (130): Beckman was just inside the line at No. 124 before the tournament started, so he wasn't a sure thing by any means. So when he missed the cut by four shots, he knew his chances of making the playoffs were slim. He ended up dropping six spots in the final standings, and out of the top-125.
