About how much does it cost to fix a '92 lexus ES300 with a major trans leak?

Im thinking about buying a car. Its my first car. The only thing is the car has a major trans leak. Its a 1992 lexus. In the sellers ad it says it has a major trans leak, but every thing else is good. The price is $399 o.b.o...my question is, about how much would it take to fix the leak..also since its only $399, is this a good deal or a rip off? Thanks

Find a shop in your area that specializes in trans swaps or rebuilt transmissions. They should only do trans jobs. They will tell you what your looking at price wise. I would look at Nissans if I were you. They are not considered luxury cars and will be cheaper to own and maintain. It would be better to get a $1,000.00 car than a $400.00 car that needs work. You should be able to drive your "new" car home. If you bought that $400.00 car, your a sucker.
