Adrian Beltre, signed by the Texas Rangers in the offseason to a five-year, $80 million deal, didn’t get off on the right foot in spring training. The third baseman is schedule to miss the next two weeks with a calf strain on his right leg. The good news, however, is that the Rangers think he’ll be in the lineup for Opening Night.
While Beltre is out, expect Michael Young to play at third base. Young was the team’s third baseman last season prior to the addition of Beltre.
The 31-year-old Beltre is coming off of one of the best seasons of his career. Playing for the Boston Red Sox, the native of the Dominican Republic hit .321 with 28 homers, 102 RBIs and 84 runs. In the field, Beltre is one of the best defensive third basemen in all of baseball.
