Air Travel - ? about the 3-1-1 rule for carry on bags?

Does anyone know if solid deodorant or face creams (not really a liquid) have to go in the 3-1-1- bag, or if they can just be packed in my carry-on?

I have always checked my luggage before, but this time am just taking a short weeend trip and want to carry it with me to save the $ for checking it.

Solid deodorant is fine...on the face cream ..if it's wet to the touch it's a liquid so place it in the baggie...
