I am looking to buy used alfa 147 2002.
I hear they have frequent problems with selespeed gearbox. I am not too sure
what they are but heard they are bit like tiptronics.
So is it that I can drive in normal Auto mode when I want to and not drive in selespeed transmission?
or does it not work like that.
And if I can do that, will that by any chance lower the risk of having problem rising with them?
(since I am not using it)
Thanks

Don't know much about Romeos. I like them but I do know they cost alot to fix. Good luck with your car

I love Alfas and until recently we had a great 156 but it was too large for the other half so we had to sell it. It was a manual. i have no time to go into detail but before buying the 156 I looked into the Selespeed ones.
Please trust me - do not buy one. It might seem fine if you test it now but could cost £900 to replace soon after. One of Alfas mistakes I am afraid.

Had one. They are great cars, fast as ... owt. Sele is ace drive in automatic or use the paddle gearchange with no clutch - excellent.
Be aware if the brake light switch fails the car wont start!. (its two circuit so the brake lights still work - its worth having a spare as its easy to change.)
There is also a simialr problem with switches / connections inside one of the door panels - not sure what, maybe the door lock switch - that causes problems with the gearchange.
However it cost £200 for the main dealer to change them! So before you get one check around and see if you can find a good non-main dealer garage that will service / fix it for you.

Because of reliability concerns and reputation however you should get one DEAD CHEAP! - expect to pay a LOT less than for similar performance cars mine was £6k for an 06 plater last year.
