alternator for opel gt?

I have a 1970 opel gt, and I have a question, I put a new battery in my opel but when I was driving it the other night, the head lights and interior lights started to go dim then the car just went out, DEAD! would that be the alternator?
 
Yes i think the alternator is like a second battery and it does do that stuff if it's going out and it will also suck all your battery juice if it doesn't get replaced. I'm not an expert though

Yep, your alternator is probably not making power. Pull it and replace it.

Wow, you are still driving a 1970 Opel GT. You are either fanatical about preventive maintenance or were desperate for a car when you got it.
