Android google docs app problems?

So yesterday I downloaded google docs to put a study guide onto my phone for one of my college classes. I then went to bed and had wifi and 3G turned off. When I turned 3G on today, I put my phone in my pocket and in 30 mins my phone got extremely hot so I used a system app and found that google docs has been manually checking for new docs several times a minute instead of pushing and it was set to auto sync. This drained the battery 10% in 30 mins and I turned auto sync off and it is fine. Any ideas how to fix this or has anyone else experienced this? Thanks!
