Anyone with knowledge of blu-ray dvd?

Just picked up a blu-ray player recently.

A couple movies I've checked so far have pretty decent picture quality.....not necessesarily what I hoped for with all the big hype but not bad either. But for some reason almost half the movies I have look just about the same as any other dvd....no noticable improvement whatsoever. I am using 1080p lcd so hardware shouldn't be an issue.

The audio on all of them is fantastic but Is it possible that only some movies look better picture quality in blu-ray?

I also have a couple older dvds (not blu-ray) which seem to look ultra crisp and even better than some of the blu-ray stuff. (miami vice comes to mind as one of them). It's just a regular plain old dvd but it looks noticably better than most even on my older non hd tv. How does this happen?

Also have a couple older dvds which say "mastered in high definition" what does that even mean?? ...i haven't noticed that phrase on any of the newer blu-ray discs

any thoughts or advice guys?

I assume you are using either component or HDMI cables.
Component probably restricts the output to 720p, HDMI can go all the way to 1080p.
It is true that picture quality depends a lot on the authoring setup.
Some BD players allow you to chose between RGB and YPbPr playback - Pick YPbPr.

Mastered in HD, probably means that until the last DVD authoring stage, all other video processing was done in HD.
