Nope you did good the older jeep cherokee , particularly the grand cherokee were a problem from 2001 back to 1987 jeep cherokee had a dismall reputation , but chrysler has done a lot of work in the last 10 years to get jeeps that are what they should be a good decent dependable ride. I looked in carcomplaints.com and on the home page click on jeep on the left in blue letters,and then scroll down and pick the cherokee, you will see the older models listed but the 98 which was the worst year only had 10 complaints. So from what I can tell the new ones are much , much better there are no complaints past 01 you can also type " 2007 jeep cherokee ? " in your web box on top of the screen and see what is listed on the internet or google for that year jeep I tried it and found some good and bad reviews in yahoo so it all depends on who you talk to sometimes, however there is not page after page of complaints like some models of jeeps got, like the liberty that was such a pile of junk dealers would not take it as a trade in sometimes. So enjoy your jeep, I dont know who "some people are" but the information I found does not support it as abad vehicle.
