Are the tournaments about The Karate Kid (2010) real?

In the new Karate Kid they hold tournaments at the end and they seem to be fake and very dangerous, highly over-exaggerated. The kids fight with shoes on and no pads, bare fists are used. They also strike and use full contact in the Kung Fu fights. What kind of tournaments are these?
