Are these signs my mobo was dying or something else?

In mid may, late july I started having problems concerning my computer functioning. This was after both replacing the power supply (Upgraded to a 400w) and the GPU (IIRC, it was either a 9500 or 9600 GT, it could run L4D almost flawlessly) and doing 2 system restores.

The symptoms were simple, I had periodic crashes after the PC would be on for a bit too long, freezing followed by a loud ringing noise, a blue screen of death, a FUZZY blue screen of death and finally, the last different symptom was an ORANGE screen of death.

Now I had asked my friend who was fairly PC savvy, builds his own units an upgrades them frequently, as well as consensus from another friend, and they said that the syptoms I was experiencing almost had to be the motherboard, however I read somewhere that these symptoms could also be processor or ram related. The processor was a 2.47GHz dual core and the RAM was 2 GB. The unit itself was an HP 2005 Windows Media Center, I think it was called the 1650e?

If anyone can give me any advice on what you think my problem was, that would help, as I am planning to upgrade it very soon with christmas funds. Essentially, I wanna know if it's JUST a motherboard issue or all three or two, etc...

Thanks :D
