Are uterine fibroid tumors hard to remove and do they cause female infertility?

My girlfriend has a couple fibroid tumors on her uterus and I am worried about it. Are they difficult to remove? Can they cause infertility if her uterus is still intact? Has anyone out there had personal experiences with this?
