The car is a 1982 Audi 4000 coupe, and when I start it up the car is fine, but after some driving when I come to a stop the engine will be revving up and down no more than a very short 100-200 RPM. However, when I then accelerate, the acceleration is also not even and smooth, it lurches at the same rate that the RPMs went up and down when idling. Could this be due to the ECU becoming senile? Or could it be that the idle control valve just needs to be cleaned (yet as I explained, it happens when accelerating too and not just idling). Any other ideas of what it could be?

Could be a vacuum leak. I'd get it to a reputable repair facility and pay to have it checked out properly and get an estimate, good luck.

Very unlikely that it is the idle control valve. Could be a hundred and one other things though
