An audiophile would most likely spend $500-$700 on a single speaker and scoff at the notion of listening to MP3s.

The problem is that a lot of iPod music, low bitrate MP3s, will not sound very good on a good stereo system. The bass will be lacking and the music will be thin overall. Higher bitrate MP3s, like 256kb/s ones, may sound a little better.

There are some audio video receivers that have an MP3 enhancement feature and they do make it sound a little better. For your budget and to get high quality you would have to look to the secondary market (used).

The Onkyo TX-SR607 is a nice receiver which retails for $500-$600 new. If you only plan on doing 2-channel listening the the Harman Kardon HK 3490 is a nice receiver. Pair that with some Klipsch RF-62 floorstanding speakers and you'd have a very nice system. Combined that would probably cost around a $1200 if you shopped around. If you wanted 8" drivers the Klipsch RF-82 is a very nice speaker but would most likely end up raising your end price to $1600 combined.

You would be very impressed with either and could hook them into your TV and DVD/CD player for even more enjoyment. You could look for similar products on kijiji.com, craigslist, audiogon.com, ebay or local buy and sells.
