So, in the end of the 2nd season Aang gets shot by lightning and it cuts off his avatar state, and when he's talking to Katara in the middle of the Ember Island Players, he makes a comment that he would probably be in the avatar state if he hadn't blocked his chuckra, so how could he enter the avatar state at the end of the series and defeat the fire lord?
