Best inexpensive vacation spots for unmarried couples?

Looking ahead to our two year mark, I'd like to surprise my significant other with a vacation. This will be towards the middle to end of May. We live in the Midwest. I would be open to any ideas or suggestions, so long as they aren't more than a thousand dollars or outside the U.S. (I don't want to have to bother with getting both of us passports.) He's 35 and I'm 25, he's seen a lot of the U.S. and has lived in other places besides the Midwest, while I haven't. Maybe a road trip? Or take a flight somewhere? Any good suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!!
