Best techniques/microphones to record screaming vocals (hardcore/death metal/etc.)?

for techniques, is allowing the screamer to hold the mic (say a SM57) and cup it like he/she would live or is it better to let them scream into a large diaphragm condenser on a mic stand (not touching the mic with their hands)?

Any advice on EQing & compressing the screams as well?
