Best Vacuums For Picking Up Dog Hair?

I have a Golden Retriever and we go through vacuums it seems like every 6 months because of the dog hair. Our vacuum died today that was purchased in the summer. Does anyone know of a vacuum that is really good for picking up dog hair from carpets? My husband says there isn't one invented yet. I've spent between one and three hundred dollars on vacuums and nothing worksl. They all burn out and the canister types get nasty.
