I Just got a betta 5days ago he's a Purple male & i named him Batman, everything seems fine i read anything i could about this kind of fish but there not answers for everything, so im wonder do betta's like to hang out on top of the tank allot (it is a 1 gallon tank) or should i remove aLittle or hafe for him? Also he's a lone fish ( i know Betta's will kill each other if but in the same tank & im Not breeding Him "ever" no.) Now i read betta's like the water temp between 70 & 80 F what can i do for that right now its room temp the house is 75F he's no where near a cold Breeze or windows. Also i have a filter but i read betta's really don't care for them, they dont like curates cuz they cant swim well in them and it doesn't really matter anyway cuz you have to clean the tank every 5days anyway. right? (i just did today so he's good.) One last thing i walked into my room and he randomly flares up, On me? he looks pissed then he calms down after alittile bit there no mirror or betta near by and nothing that would make him mad far i know, is he just bored & playing around or does he just hate me because he's in a new place?
I just added the filter so that's on but i dont have anything yet to heat his tank... i need to get something soon for that but idk what, the room temp 74F ill turn it up alittile more. i dont have anything to see what the water temp is ether im also going to get in a live betta Plant. Anyway im sure the tank is the right size? its a basic size tank in the picture on the box that the tank came in had a betta in it so it was made just for betta's im sure that's fine for now & it only takes 1 & a hafe gallons to fill it up (i just cleaned it)

Hey!

First off, a 1 gallon is way too small! Wherever you read about bettas is wrong!

A singe betta fish needs a minimum of a 5 gallon aquarium for swimming space (in the wild they don't live in puddles, but large rice paddies!) and a heater to keep the temperature around 75F to 86F (it's hot where they live in thailand) and a filter to keep the water clean from ammonia, nitrite, as these are harmful for any fish. A bowl will not allow proper filtration which means bad water quality which means sad, unhealthy fish. Even if you clean the bowl every few days the water gets bad! Fish waste quickly becomes ammonia, and to keep the water at OK conditions you would need to do about a 50% water change twice a day! And that's stressful for the fish and hard work!

Please buy a proper aquarium to make sure your pet is happy, it's not fair that he has to endure being in a bowl! Make sure to cycle it (this is VERY important!!) to make it healthier for your fish and easier to maintain proper water quality. It will also be easier for you :D

As for your other questions, bettas are labyrinth fish, meaning they are able to breath the air if the water around them doesn't have enough oxygen, so this may be a reason he likes to stay by the top. He may also see his reflection when you come by, causing him to try attack himself.

Bettas are actually (mostly) peacful! they can be housed with many fish without problems as long as you choose the tank-mates well. It is usually other fish attacking the long fins of the betta than the betta attacking the fish! All my three bettas are living in community aquariums/pond without a problem.

I hope you give Batman a good home, when bettas are places in a healthy environment they show so much character and personality, it's true! You'll see what I mean if you buy a larger aquarium and a filter and heater :D
