...life reading the Bible yet? never actually understand it the way it was meant to be understood?

Let's begin this with me making the claim that the Bible is nothing more than allegory and myth, that nothing in the Bible actually happened or will happen literally and/or historically. This is no more or less outrageous a claim than the literalist's claim that everything in the Bible actually has happened and/or will happen; therefore, my claim is just as valid as yours.

Let's further hypothesize that the "true meanings" of the Bible are embedded deeply beneath layers of allegory, symbolism, and myth, which was pre-extent thousands of years prior to the writing of the Bible. Therefore, the teachings of Literalist Christianity fall way off the mark as intended by the original writers of scripture.

Now, let's further assume that I am not an atheist, agnostic, or a believer of any religion. Therefore, I am not asking this question to evangelize or destroy any particular set of beliefs. I ask this question from a philosophical point of view with the hope of broadening the mental attitude of the reader.

Is it not the mental attitude of the writer than requires broadening?
