Blu-Ray benefit for PS3 only with 1080p resolution?

After reading different message boards and speaking with different retail outlets, I was told that Blu-Ray movies will run on PS3 at 720p and look much better than upscaled DVDs. Has anyone found this to be true? I have not. I purchased an HDMI cable today, which actually upped my PS3 resolution to 1080i on my Samsung 42" DLP. However, when watching a Blu-Ray movie, I am not seeing a major (if any) difference over the DVD of the same film ("Casino Royale" in this case). So do movie buffs only benefit from Blu-Ray if they have true 1080p resolution from their TV?

There's a huge difference between Blu-Ray and a DVD. I have a 720p Samsung with a 7000:1 contrast ratio, and a PS3 with an HDMI cable. The picture looks phenomenal. I have Casino Royale and it looks great.

Some Blu-Rays aren't transferred as will as others, for one reason or the other. But Royale looks great.

The most important thing in Picture quality is contrast ratio. If you have a cheap HDTV with a contrast ratio of 1000:1, the picture isn't gonna be all that. Resolution is fourth on the list, next to color and something else.

You might have to change your setting on your PS3.
