blu ray quality on ps3 not so great, why?

so i have a ps3 and i decided to buy a blu ray movie to see if it was any good. i did and i bought an hdmi cable too but not a brand name one or expensive one. and i saw the movie and i think its worse than regular dvd. i can see pixels in the background sort of like a flicker on the screen. tv channels look better than this. and i have a 42 inch panasonic plasma. is it something im doing wrong or do i need to change the settings or what?

Is your tv a 1080p it doens't matter if you have hdmi cables if you only have 1080i your bluray player will stretch the screen to the 1080p status but it will actually only be 1080i or 720p this is why the image looks like crap if you do not have 1080p your not getting true bluray picture.

I'm betting you have a 720p tv.
