So...im in the market for a blu-ray player...probably a PS3 after the reviews i've read on it...and its versatility as an all in one unit. What can i expect resolution wise on my 720p Panasonic Viera Plasma when vierwing blu-ray? They are always demo-ing blu-ray on 1080p in the stores...so i cannot get a grasp on what i'm going to see on 720p. Am i looking at a big jump up from DVD? I know the frame rates are higher on Blu-ray...but i know true dvd is in 720p. I have my current setup broadcasting 720p over HDMI on a Harman Kardon DVD player and it looks pretty sharp. My TV's model number is TH-42PX80U. Thanks!

On a 42" set, you won't see a huge difference between blu-ray and your upconverting dvd but there will be less artifacts and a sharper picture. How much better depends on the Harmon Kardon which normally do a very good job converting the signal. You will end up switching over to blu-ray at some point anyway. DVDs are being phased out.

Your real problem will be using the PS3 on a plasma. They are much better now than they used to be but still suffer from burn-in and you should be careful when playing video games. Just don't play for too long and use the "game" mode on the tv.

We have a 720p projection LCD and Blu-ray still looks amazing on it compared to DVD. We aspire to get a 1080p 40" or so later to watch in full resolution, but from what I've seen, it's hard to discern between 1080p and 720p anyway. We took our PS3 to a friend's house who had just gotten a 1080p tv.

Blu really is that much better, and with an HD sound system, it is amazing. I second the PS3 choice for Blu, you really are getting the most for your money and making your player the hub of your entertainment theater.
